Dog Vaccination FAQs

What are the best vaccines to get if I board my dog frequently?

Rabies, DAPP, Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Canine Influenza. Bordetella protects your pet against kennel cough, which is most frequently contracted when there are a lot of animals sharing a space, such as an animal shelter, doggie daycare, or boarding.  Leptospirosis protects against a deadly virus found in standing water or shared water bowls. Influenza is commonly required by boarding facilities, as canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads easily when animals are in close contact such as animal shelters or boarding facilities.

While only the rabies vaccine is legally required in the state of Texas, there are several very important vaccines you should get your pet. The core vaccines are Rabies, DAPP (Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, and Parainfluenza), and Bordetella.

While it’s not a required vaccine in Texas, leptospirosis is a deadly virus found in standing water. You dog could encounter leptospirosis in several ways from a puddle of water in your yard, playing in a pool, river, or lake, and even sharing a water bowl at doggie daycare.

Cat Vaccination FAQs

What are the core vaccines for cats?

Rabies and FVRCP are considered the core vaccines for cats.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (Viral respiratory disease), Feline Calicivirus (respiratory disease that causes vomiting, diarrhea, oral ulcers), Feline Panleukopenia (a highly contagious and fatal disease that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and often dehydration).

It is highly recommended even if your cat does not go outdoors. Feline Leukemia is a contagious disease that shortens a cats lifespan once contracted. It can be contracted in several different ways such as being passed from mother to kitten at birth, deep bite wounds, and sharing water or food dishes with an infected cat. If your cat EVER goes outdoors, this vaccine could save their life
