Why Preventive Pet Care Matters
Preventive care is the foundation of lifelong health. Many serious conditions in pets, such as heart disease, kidney issues, infections, and parasites, can develop silently without symptoms.
Regular wellness visits allow veterinarians to:
- Detect disease early
- Keep vaccinations up to date
- Prevent parasite infections
- Monitor weight and nutrition
- Extend lifespan and quality of life
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), routine veterinary care significantly improves long-term pet health outcomes.

PET WELLNESS FAQs
WHAT IS A PET WELLNESS EXAM?
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE APPOINTMENT?
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
Most pets should have a wellness exam at least once a year to maintain good overall health and detect early signs of illness. Senior pets, usually around 7 years and older, benefit from exams every six months due to faster health changes as they age. Regular checkups allow veterinarians to monitor weight, dental health, heart function, and lifestyle risks, helping prevent serious conditions before they develop into costly or life-threatening problems.
Are vaccinations really necessary for indoor pets?
Yes, indoor pets still need vaccinations even if they rarely go outside. Viruses and bacteria can enter the home through humans, other animals, clothing, shoes, or even open windows and doors. Diseases such as rabies and feline panleukopenia can be extremely serious and sometimes fatal. Vaccinations provide essential protection and help ensure your pet remains safe throughout their life, regardless of whether they live indoors or have limited outdoor exposure.
What happens if my pet misses a vaccine?
If your pet misses a scheduled vaccine, it does not always mean starting over, but it depends on how long the delay has been. In some cases, your Austin veterinarian may restart the series or give a booster to restore full immunity. Delays can leave pets vulnerable to disease, so it is important to reschedule as soon as possible. Our veterinary team will review your pet’s history and create a safe catch-up plan.
My pet seems healthy. Do they still need a wellness exam?
Yes. Many serious conditions, including heart disease, early kidney disease, and dental disease, show no obvious symptoms until they’re advanced. Wellness exams are how we catch these issues early, when treatment is most effective and least expensive.
What's the difference between a wellness visit and a sick visit?
A wellness visit is a scheduled preventive checkup for a healthy pet. A sick visit is when your pet is showing symptoms of illness or injury. If your pet seems unwell, don’t wait for a scheduled wellness slot. Contact us immediately or visit our illness and injury services.
How much do wellness plans cost?
Wellness plan pricing typically ranges depending on your pet’s age and needs. Puppy and kitten plans generally start around $40 to $85 per month, while adult dog and cat plans usually range from $25 to $70 per month. These plans are structured to spread preventive care costs over time, making veterinary care more predictable and budget-friendly for pet owners. Get help choosing the right plan for your pet.
